Expandable Battery Backup Systems Are Replacing Generators As The Primary Backup Power Source Due To Restrictions

Modular Extended Backup Time Battery Backup UPS System

Expandable modular battery backup UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems are becoming more popular as a maintenance free primary backup power sources for equipment such as elevators, mass spectrometers, HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) machines, sump pumps, medical refrigerators, medical freezers, ultrasound devices, and other devices critical to operations. This is due to a variety of factors, but the main factor tends to be the automatic nature of these systems. After the system is installed, it can essentially be forgotten for 3-5 years which is increasingly important as more and more facilities are automated and may not have staff onsite. Even if the battery banks are fully exhausted during a prolonged outage, the system automatically restarts when utility power is restored.

During 2017, multiple extended time battery backup systems like the one pictured above were purchased and installed to provide real-time backup power to all the wall receptacles in a secure refrigerator/freezer room. Backup time for customers using these systems to backup critical refrigerators/freezers ranges from 2 hours to 8 hours depending on factors such as the ambient air temperature of the room the refrigerators/freezers are in, the internal temperature set for each refrigerator or freezer, and how many refrigerators or freezers are operating and in use.

Battery backup UPS systems are real-time unlike generators which means there is no delay or switching time to backup power as the wall receptacles are always powered from the output of the backup power system. At the time of this writing, there are no AQMD (Air Quality Management District), CARB (California Air Resources Board), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) or other air quality permits required to purchase, use, or maintain battery backup UPS systems like there are for diesel, gasoline, or natural gas generators. There are no maintenance requirements for 3-5 years for this type of system. It is completely automatic, so there is no user intervention required. There are also no state imposed air quality standards like there are for backup generators that limit on how many times it is used or how many hours per year it is used like there are for generators which seems to be an increasing concern for business and building owners as they can't predict the number or duration of outages they might experience throughout the year.

This type of system is modular and can be scaled up or down in load capacity or backup time.
