Inflation Reduction Act – Effective Immediately - 30% Tax Credit For Battery Systems Over 5kWh
Stand-Alone Storage. The Act now provides a tax credit for stand-alone energy storage projects. To qualify, the storage project must be capable of receiving, storing, and delivering electrical energy and have a nameplate capacity of at least 5 kWh. Thermal storage projects and hydrogen storage projects qualify under the new provision. Like the ITC for other technologies, the base ITC for stand-alone storage is 6%, and increases to 30% for projects that satisfy the prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements or if they are placed into service prior to 60 days after the Treasury Secretary issues guidance on prevailing wage and apprenticeship standards.

Two potential issues were found through remote power monitoring. The first potential issue is that the air temperature was high at almost 90°F (most labs stay around 74°F). The second issue is that the facility voltage swings at least 8.4 volts throughout the day. For example, on 05/04/2022, the maximum facility voltage was 209.2 volts. The minimum facility voltage for that day was 200.8 volts. Typically facility power should stay fairly steady at 208 volts in commercial buildings and labs.
The pump for the Agilent Infinity Lab LC/MSD iQ operates best at ~230 volts AC. The facility voltage at this lab was recorded 23% lower than 230 volts in a single day which could lead to instrument malfunction if not corrected or on a BBP UPS.
Luckily, the BBP 6KVA plug and play UPS keeps the power fluctuation down to about ~1 volt so none of these fluctuations impact the attached instrument components. This is due to the built in isolation transformer (see inside look below).

These systems keep sensitive instruments running during voltage fluctuations and short duration power outages. Besides providing "always on" backup power, they correct voltage issues at the lab/facility/receptacle so the attached instrument only receives the proper voltage required at all times. For example, if your lab only has 208 volt power and the instrument requires 230 volts, the built in isolation transformer isolates the input voltage and only outputs 230 volts to the instrument. There are both 115 volt and 230 volt receptacles so each instrument plus its peripherals can all plug into the same UPS. An example would be a computer & LC plugged into the 115 volt receptacles and the MS component plugged into one of the 230 volt receptacles. In (5) separate case studies with instrument manufacturer field service representatives at (5) different labs, the 6kVA and 10kVA have been proven to stop reoccurring board failures.
Both models look identical other than the 6kVA using a NEMA L6-30P (plug, 200-240 volts, 30 amps) for input and the 10kVA using a NEMA 6-50P (plug, 200-240 volts, 50 amps) for input. The output PDU (power distribution unit) is exactly the same for both models. The 6kVA can support up to 6,000 watts of attached equipment whereas the 10kVA can support up to 10,000 watts of attached load.

]]>This Battery Backup Power, Inc. 10KVA hardwired power conditioning UPS is fed by a 208 volt, 50 amp double pole breaker from the main electrical panel and has its output connected to a 120/240 volt split phase sub panel. The sub panel connected to the UPS output then feeds a computer, monitor, chiller, and ICP-MS in a Texas laboratory. The built in isolation transformer converts the voltage and cleans up the power going to the lab instruments whether there is utility power or not. During a power outage, the lab will continue to operate as the battery backup function will kick in automatically.
This system has a max output of 10,000 watts (83 amps @ 120 volts or 41 amps @ 240 volts). It is recommended that 6 AWG THHN or THWN is used to connect the hardwire 10KVA UPS to the main panel and sub panel. The LCD will provide information such as load level, incoming voltage, temperature, and estimated remaining backup time based on battery charge level and load level.
The hardwire 10KVA wiring diagram is viewable below. Since it has a built in transformer, it is considered a "separately derived system", so ground and neutral should be bonded either at the terminal block or using the bonding screw in the sub panel that is connected to the UPS output.

]]>In the photo above, a Battery Backup Power, Inc. Plug and Play 6 KVA (SKU:BBP-ADV-6000-PSW-ONL-L630P-120240PDU) is acting as a frequency converter, voltage regulator, power conditioner, and battery backup UPS (uninterruptible power supply) all at once.
It is providing electrical power to a Roche LightCycler Cobas Z 480 and its associated computer/monitor in Barbados after being exported from the United States. The power available in Barbados is 200 VAC 50 Hz. The power requirement for electronics used in the United States is either 120 VAC 60 Hz (computer/monitor) or 240 VAC 60 Hz (PCR).
Below is a diagram of the universal output PDU attached to the Battery Backup Power, Inc. 6KVA and 10KVA plug and play models. It is also converting the frequency from 50 Hz which is standard in Barbados to 60 Hz which is standard in the United States.
Besides acting as a voltage and frequency converter, the Battery Backup Power, Inc. Plug and Play 6 KVA (SKU:BBP-ADV-6000-PSW-ONL-L630P-120240PDU) will provide seamless backup power when the utility power fails allowing the instrument to continue operating as if nothing happened. This facility has a backup generator, so the UPS will provide temporary bridge power while the generator starts up in a utility power outage event. Facilitating public access to the COVID-19 vaccine supply is the most effective way to combat the on-going COVID-19 health crisis and expedite returning the United States to pre-COVID normalcy. The difficulties of maintaining the temperature needs of the COVID-19 vaccine presents a unique threat of spoliation and loss of the existing and future national vaccine supply.(1)California has experienced the ongoing and persistent threat of power outages(2) that will be catastrophic to the safety of the vaccine supply in the upcoming 2021 spring and summer months(3). Once the backup system arrives, anyone can simply plug the 6KVA system into the wall receptacle, plug the freezer into the correct receptacle, turn on the system and walk away. After being plugged in and turned on, the freezer has twelve to twenty-four hours of automatic backup power which can be expanded further by adding additional external battery packs. This will provide enough time for utility power to be restored or to use/distribute the vaccines in the impacted freezer.

]]>Most lab instruments require a steady 120 volts, 220 volts, or 230 volts as they are engineered and built for global use. This leads to a problem where the voltage available in buildings in the United States is different than what is required for certain lab instruments such as LCMS, GCMS, GC, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, PCR, and other mid-large sized instruments.
This issue is compounded by fact that the longer a wire is, the greater the voltage drops unless the wire is upsized to compensate for the loss. In cases where an electric panel is on one side of the building and the wall receptacle is on the other side of the building, the voltage can drop significantly below the acceptable range for the device/instrument plugged into that receptacle causing equipment failures.

]]>Successful COVID-19 testing requires a clean constant supply of electricity to power the lab instruments that conduct sample analysis. If power is lost during a sample run, it could mean that the sample is lost and another patient sample would need to be acquired which could take days and lead to additional infections.
When laboratories use high volume instruments to process samples, a brief power outage or voltage fluctuation may mean upward of 1,000 samples are lost or not processed correctly. ]]>The customer had an older UPS from a competitor that burned up while connected to a Roche Cobas 6000 analyzer. Customer support from the competitor UPS company was unable or unwilling to offer any guidance to the customer.
After receiving no help from the competitor, the lab manager contacted Battery Backup Power, Inc. at (855) 330-7799. Battery Backup Power, Inc. engineers sized the correct replacement UPS and added the compatibility guarantee which ensures the customer does not pay for a UPS that doesn't work for their intended purpose.
Once the Battery Backup Power, Inc. UPS was plugged into the customer's wall receptacle, the UPS gave an error 33 code. Battery Backup Power, Inc. customer service staff instructed the customer to run the Roche Cobas 6000 analyzer on the UPS while the UPS was unplugged from the wall receptacle. The instrument performed normally which isolated the issue to the customer's wall receptacle.
Battery Backup Power, Inc. then wrote up a diagnosis to forward to the customer's electrician of choice recommending that the wiring in the wall, the wall receptacle, and breaker be replaced. The issue was either voltage on the ground wire or a faulty breaker. Due to the unknown extent of the damage caused when the competitor's UPS failed, replacing all three components (wire, receptacle, breaker) was the best course of action.

Battery Backup Power, Inc. provides UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems for commercial and industrial backup power applications. As load shifting is becoming more desirable for electrical utility rate reduction, these UPS systems can serve both purposes flawlessly with the addition of a 3 pole contactor and digital timer (see above diagram).
If a power outage occurs or the timer triggers the contactor to open during peak hours (typically 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.), the Battery Backup Power, Inc. UPS will power the facility. The contactor and timer allow the UPS to continue to act as a backup power system (primary purpose) and load shifting power source for rate reduction (secondary purpose). The power consumption from the utility will drop to 0 during the time the UPS is operating when the contactor on the input side is open. The timer should be set to close the contactor after peak hours pass allowing the UPS to recharge during lower rate hours. This setup is significantly more cost effective and less time consuming to implement than an ESS system with bi-directional inverter as the UPS will not back feed the utility in the event of a power failure so no utility approval is required. Battery Backup Power, Inc. UPS systems are all double conversion (online) which means that they constantly regulate voltage and eliminate and disruption of power during a power failure or transition to backup only (0 ms transfer delay). Even the most sensitive electronics will not be impacted by the switching.
Two considerations must be made before implementing a UPS as a dual purpose backup and load shifting system.
1. The UPS size/capacity (KVA/KW rating) must be greater than the facility's peak load.
2. The UPS system battery capacity (Amp Hours or KWH) should be 2 to 4 times the size needed to provide power during the peak rate hours. For example, if the load is an average of 4,000 watts from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., that is 20,000 WH (watt hours) or 20 KWH (kilowatt hours). The battery capacity should be at least 40 KWH. Alternatively, this system can be scaled down and used on a sub panel rather than the main panel.

To get the compatibility guarantee, the customer must contact Battery Backup Power, Inc. technical support before ordering and provide them with the instrument make/model as well as a photo of the electrical tag on the back of the instrument(s). If placing multiple instruments on a single UPS, a list with the voltage and amperage (or VA rating) from the electrical tag on each instrument must be provided along with the instrument make/model. The technical support team will then issue the quote by email rather than the sales team and list the instrument compatibility as a line item in the quote. The customer must also have the proper wall receptacle installed for the UPS to ensure the input power requirements are met. For example a 6KVA plug and play model UPS will have a NEMA L6-30P (plug, 208-240 volts, 30 amps) and a 10KVA plug and play model UPS will have a NEMA 6-50P (plug, 208-240 volts, 50 amps).

UPS With Hologic Machine

This Battery Backup Power, Inc. 10KVA single phase UPS takes in power from either shore power or generator power and outputs uninterrupted clean 240 volts AC to the pictured Hologic diagnostic and medical imaging machine. Both are housed in a mobile medical center (truck and trailer), so the transition between shore power and on board generator power is frequent. Medical exams can't be stopped to allow the transition to occur because the process would take approximately 30+ minutes to shut the scanner down safely, turn on the generator, wait for it to output the correct voltage, transfer to the secondary source, then boot up the scanner again.

The UPS is fed by a 45 amp 3 pole breaker. The UPS output feeds a 3 phase panel which then splits the 3 phases into 3 separate 120 volt single phase circuits. Each of those circuits feeds it own duplex receptacle for the server rack (seen below).
