How The UNR Chemistry Department Continues Operating When The Electric Company Fails

The University Of Nevada, Reno Chemistry Department (https://www.unr.edu/chemistry) routinely performs "state-of-the-art chemistry research". The department operates sophisticated laboratory instruments that require clean power to function correctly.

Unfortunately, the electric utility serving the school and surrounding area (NV Energy) has one of the lowest satisfaction ratings in the country (Consumer Affairs, https://www.consumeraffairs.com/utilities/nv_energy.html). Reports of consistent power issues range from complete black outs to wild voltage fluctuations. This situation makes it extremely difficult to operate sensitive electronics.
