20kVA/20kW 120/208Y 3 Phase Backup For Entire Lab's PCR Instruments
This Battery Backup Power, Inc. 20kVA/20kW 120/208Y VAC 3 phase UPS is providing ~8 hours of backup to a medical clinics multiple PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) instruments. It provides real time voltage regulation, power conditioning, and seamless backup power (no blip, no transfer delay, no transition lag whatsoever). It also is compatible with building generators (natural gas, gasoline, or diesel) to make the transitions between utility power and generator power seamless.

This system was installed with the optional make before break wrap around maintenance bypass switch. This optional switch (shown on wall with dial) allows for the UPS battery backup to be taken completely out of the circuit for maintenance or any other reason without ever disrupting the load.

Installing the make before break external maintenance wrap around bypass switch adds a few more steps to the installation. For the 20kVA/20kW UPS, the UTILITY INPUT (TB1) of the bypass switch will be fed by a 70A 3 pole breaker (55A X 1.25NEC to next available breaker size) from the main panel or upstream panel. The UPS INPUT (TB2) will go the input terminal of the UPS. The UPS OUTPUT (TB3) will go to the output terminal of the UPS. The OUTPUT TO LOAD (TB4) will go to the fused disconnect or new sub panel that feeds the critical load(s). Phase rotation is critically important here for the switch to function properly. Using a phase rotation meter/tester is advised, but not required. The UPS will alert you of any phase rotation issues. If you have a phase rotation alert, simply shut down the UPS and upstream feed, then swap 2 of the hot wires on the input terminal. Once you restart the UPS, the error should be resolved.

To achieve the required ~8 hours of backup, this system was connected to (5) external battery packs which are daisy chained on the other side of the wall and pass through and connect to the inverter via the included color coded Anderson PowerPole connectors.

This system can be easily installed in less than ~4 hours by most electricians. Since it is UL 1778 and doesn't back feed the utility company, it doesn't usually require a permit (check with local AHJ) or utility permission to connect.
